Surprisingly not many pet owners actually bother to organize pet insurance; though these same people would argue that they are part of the family. We all know just how important it is to have health insurance; when we arrange insurance for every other area, why isn’t the family pet insured?

It may at first sound like just another regular expense; until pet owners realize that those trips to the vet can be very expensive! Like many other areas, the cost of vet fees has increased as well; this has meant that providers of pet insurance products have also been forced to increase premiums.

Pet health cover costs, like many other types of insurance plans, are on the increase; this should really be enough to make you think twice about delaying but this isn’t the only reason. Unfortunately, domestic animals become sick from time to time or are involved in an accident; when this happens, the cost of treatment may even cause financial strain.

If you are in this unenviable position then a choice may have to be made; Really, you should never have to think about how much it is going to cost.

I had doubts about treating our dog some time ago when he was involved in an accident; the agony of making a decision like that is something I hope not to repeat. Especially when you know that even with the surgery and treatments, your pet could still die; there are no guarantees as complications are not uncommon.

The average person does not always consider the costs involved with owning a pet; when money problems occur, temporary or otherwise, this causes further worries. If you are experiencing money worries then raising additional finances can prove embarrassing.

A poor financial situation should never be a reason why a pet does not receive adequate attention; arranging a pet insurance policy saves this type of predicament from happening in the future. Pet healthcare insurance can usually be purchased relatively inexpensively despite recent rises; plans are still affordable, especially when you consider the alternative.

Various options exist with this type of pet healthcare policy; this can even extend to offering multi-pet discounts. All pet owners should think carefully about what healthcare provision they have made for their pet; do not leave it until it is too late!

For several thousands of years, dogs have enjoyed a bond with man that
no other animals have. Throughout the ages, dogs have been man’s best
friend, serving as man’s companion as well as a multitude of
functions. Despite how long man and dog have been interacting,
communication barriers still exist between the two.

Dogs have the mental capacity of a two-year old child, an obvious
barrier when it comes to man attempting to communicate with his dog; a
dog processes information differently. In addition, dogs have senses
that work differently from that of a human. For instance, a dog’s
sense of smell is unarguably much more sensitive and heightened than
man’s, and a dog responds differently to reds and greens.

Anyone who is in the business of training dogs needs to understand the
fundamental characteristics of dogs in order to curb canine
misbehavior and minimize the frustration by dog owners when
communicating with their dogs.

You do not need to be a licensed dog trainer in order to teach or be
able to communicate better with your dog. There are several basic dog
training tasks you can undertake yourself. The younger your dog is,
the earlier you should start his training. Most dog breeds can start
training as early as four weeks old. Devote at least 30 minutes
teaching your dog basic skills. One hour is recommended. Below are a
few basic dog training tips you can do.

Establishing Your Dominance

* Dogs are pack animals; they are highly social animals. Dogs
descended from wolves and as such, they follow a strict hierarchy –
there is an alpha dog, beta dog, all the way down to the omega dog.
You need to understand this hierarchical scheme early on in your dog’s
training. You want to establish your dominance of the pack; your dog
must learn to look at you as the alpha male if you want an orderly
household and to keep your sanity intact.

* Of course, establishing yourself as the alpha male may be easy or
hard depending on your dog’s breed an on your dog’s personality. You
will find that similar to humans, there are dogs that are more
assertive than other dogs. While you can use commands, leashes and
collars and other training tools, it is your attitude that will play a
huge role in your dog’s training. You need to let your dog know who is
the boss.

* Establishing dominance does not mean that you only use physical
force. There will be times when you will need to apply physical force,
but only appropriately and when necessary. You can establish dominance
by being firm and waiting for your dog to comply to your commands.

* If you have a young dog, you can start teaching him that you are the
alpha male by laying him on his back and placing your hand firmly in
the middle of your dog’s chest. When your dog lowers his paws, take
this as a sign of submission. You can further assert your dominance by
putting your face close to your dog’s face.

Restraining Your Dog

* Dogs have the natural tendency to run and play. You can control this
tendency by putting your dog on a short leash. Before and after every
training session, allow your dog some play time; let him run and play.
However, when it is time for your dog’s training session, try not to
encourage play. Establish this pattern so your dog learns that
training sessions are not play sessions.

Teaching Your Dog to Obey Commands

* Teach your dog to obey short, clear commands: sit, stay, down, come.
Do not combine commands (e.g., “sit down” or “come down”) because you
will only confuse your dog.

* Issue out your commands in a firm voice; do not issue commands
harshly, and avoid sounding angry. Make your dog understand that you
are the boss.

* Be consistent with your commands. Issue every verbal command with
the same tone and hand gesture. This helps your dog learn to
understand and follow commands easily and quickly. Keep in mind that
your dog operates at the mental capacity of a two-year old child, so
consistency is your best friend when you are training your dog.

As you spend time teaching your dog the basics, you need to have the
patience and commitment to see to it that your dog learns the things
that can help both of you become better at communicating with each
other. With patience and commitment, you can form a much closer bond
with your dog.

Dog care supplies mean much more than just basic food and shelter for dogs. In fact, dog supplies nowadays include everything that may keep a dog happy and healthy. There are many pet shops that offer a comprehensive range of dog supplies.

Dog care supplies are categorized as basic, functional and pampering. Basic dog supplies include dog collars, grooming supplies, beds, kennels and food. The functional dog supplies include gates, doors, and fences, and dog treats, toys and aromatherapy massage oils are examples of pampering supplies.

Dog beds are among the most important basic supplies. Beds help keep a dog’s bones and joints healthy. Many pet shops stock dog-training supplies that are essentially training aids and equipment designed to make a dog’s training easier and more effective. They also include special dog collars designed to punish a dog for undesirable behavior. Doghouses come in different size and makes, including plastic and wooden houses. A good doghouse should be big enough for a dog to turn freely inside and must be durable enough to provide long-term shelter. Dog-grooming supplies include dog shampoos, conditioners; nail clippers, brushes and combs. There are also specific dog hygiene supplies for a dog’s ears, eyes and teeth.

There are three types of dog food — moist, dry and semi-moist dog food. Dog food should be nutritionally balanced regardless of its form. In addition, all dog food supplies should be stored properly in a cool dry place, so that the nutritional value is not lost.

Dog health care supplies are fast becoming an integral part of dog care. General dog health care supplies can be purchased without prescriptions. They include dog vitamins and supplements, flea, tick care dog supplies and dog dental care products. Pampering dog supplies include everything from dog crates, grooming supplies, toys, and costumes. These supplies are available online and dog owners can order by looking through online catalogues.

Once you have brought home your golden retriever, and have made him comfortable to the new surroundings, you have to begin training your golden retriever. In fact the sooner you start the training, the easier will it be for both you and your pet to lead a comfortable and happy life.

Training is very important for your golden retriever. With training they will understand what is an acceptable action and what is an undesirable action. Dogs usually judge their actions on the response that they get for their actions. Good responses encourage them, and bad ones don’t, so you have to be forthright in expressing yourself to your dog.

Handy Tips On Training Your Golden Retriever

- Different people would have different needs for a dog. If you are training your dog, decide on a desirable behavior code for your dog from the first day itself. Judge for yourself what you would prefer your dog to do and then zero in on training your golden retriever accordingly.

- From the very first phase, praise your dog for desirable behavior, or discourage him for an undesirable one. For example, if your golden retriever puppy is playing with your kid and fetches a ball, praise him. You may like him to perform such tasks and therefore he has to understand that. On the other hand, if he is littering around, discourage him and teach him the right way to release himself. In this way you can begin training your golden retriever puppy.

- Many a times, you may need to be very stern with your golden retriever puppy as well, especially if your puppy is being particularly naughty ? don’t hesitate.

- It is also important to remember that timing is very important while training your golden retriever. You need to immediately praise him or chide him, as the situation demands. You need to understand that dogs are very different from human beings, and hence you cannot explain things to them later. If your dog is chasing cars, and you don’t want him to do so, chide immediately. Your golden retriever will understand. On the other hand, if he is shooing away birds and guarding your food on a family picnic, commend him for his behavior.

- While training your golden retriever, please remember that he needs to develop certain healthy habits for himself. For example, you need to chide him if he eats anything that is lying on the floor or on the ground. Make sure you inculcate proper habits of food (e.g. eating from a meal bowl), so that your golden retriever can be safe and healthy.

- Many a times vets also insist that only one person in the family should feed golden retrievers. At least, this is very important for administering medicines. And, also remember to chide your golden retriever if he accepts any food from strangers. This would keep him healthy and you happy.

Please understand that time and patience are the two key things to training your golden retriever. Once you have trained your golden retriever, he will be a much better dog to manage, and a suitable companion for you and your family.
